KLIWODA

KLIWODA is developing a climate-adapted strategy to protect local groundwater resources in the German-Polish border region. The focus is on sustainable water management, preparedness for extreme weather events, and technical solutions for the retention, treatment, and infiltration of rainwater.

Project overview

Challenge

Climate change is altering water availability and extreme weather risks in eastern Saxony and the Polish border region. This increases the demands on flood prevention, drought management, groundwater recharge, and proactive water resource management.

Project goal

The aim is to develop a sustainable, climate-adapted strategy for protecting local groundwater resources. This includes examining water balances, climate adaptation measures, and technical solutions for the treatment and infiltration of rainwater.

Practical relevance

Specific solutions are being developed and tested in pilot plants for Bad Muskau and Łęknica. These include systems for the retention, treatment, and infiltration of rainwater runoff from traffic areas, as well as methods for retaining microplastics and other pollutants.

Our role in the research project

M&S Umweltprojekt is a project partner in the German-Polish research consortium KLIWODA. Together with the Dresden University of Applied Sciences and the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, we are developing climate-adapted solutions for sustainable water management in the German-Polish border region. We contribute our expertise to the collaborative project, particularly in the areas of hydrogeology, water management, environmental monitoring, and technical project implementation. The project includes the development and testing of solutions for hydrological modeling, heavy rainfall and flood prevention, stormwater retention, filter systems, and the treatment and infiltration of road runoff.
